If you already consider yourself a prepper and have been taking steps to get prepared for a few months (or years), then you may already be familiar with all the Prepper Terms And Acronyms.

But if you’re relatively new to the world of prepping, then chances are you’ve come across some Prepper Terms And Acronyms or two that made you scratch your head.

With that in mind, I’ve put together a brief list of common prepper acronyms:

  • ABC(1) = Atomic, Bacteriological, Chemical
  • ABC(2) = Airway, Breathing, Circulation
  • BBBB = Breathing, Bleeding, Breaks, Burns
  • BIB = Bug-In Bag. A kit of essentials designed for “hunkering down”, in place
  • Bug Out = Leaving the area
  • BOB = Bug Out Bag
  • BOL = Bug Out Location
  • BOR = Bug Out Route
  • BOV(1) = Bug Out Vest
  • BOV(2) = Bug Out Vehicle
  • Cache = A remotely located storage
  • CASEVAC = Casualty Evacuation
  • CBRN = Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear
  • CQC = Close Quarters Combat
  • CQB = Close Quarters Battle
  • CCP = Concealed Carry Permit
  • CCW = Concealed Carry Weapon
  • CWP = Concealed Weapons Permit
  • DECON = Decontamination
  • Doomer = A Peak Oil adherent who believes in a Malthusian-scale societal collapse.
  • EDC = Every Day Carry. What one carries at all times in case the end of the world strikes while one is out and about.
  • EOTW = End of the world
  • Electromagnetic pulse (EMP) = an extreme level of electromagnetic energy sufficient to burn out computer chips that may be caused by solar flares or by atmospheric nuclear explosions. Such an event would disable the Internet, telephones, computers, and devices that rely on computer controls, including automobiles, the electrical grid, and household appliances.
  • EMFH = every man for himself
  • FUBAR = “F***ed Up Beyond All Recognition” – Military term that means something is really messed up.
  • FAK = First Aid Kit
  • FOB = Forward Operating Base
  • FOP Forward Observation Post
  • FIFO = first in first out
  • FWIW = for what it’s worth
  • FUD = frequently abbreviated as Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt
  • GHB = Get Home Bag
  • GOOD = Get Out Of Dodge
  • GTG = good to go
  • Goblin = A criminal miscreant.
  • Golden Horde = The anticipated large mixed horde of refugees and looters that will pour out of the metropolitan regions WTSHTF.
  • G.O.O.D = Get Out of Dodge (City). Fleeing urban areas in the event of a disaster.
  • G.O.O.D. Kit = Get Out of Dodge Kit. Synonymous with Bug-Out Bag (BOB).
  • Genny = Slang for generator
  • Hard Money = Currency that is either redeemable in precious metals, or issued in the form of precious metals.
  • INCH = I’m Never Coming Home (kit). An “INCH” kit is the gear that you would take in the event of a worst case, wherein you would only have one trip “Out of Dodge.”
  • JIC = Just In Case
  • KFS = Knife, Fork, Spoon
  • KISS or K.I.S.S = “Keep it Simple, Stupid!”
  • LRW= Long Range Weapon
  • LOS = Line of Sight. Many communications technologies require an unobstructed path between transmitter and receiver, as in microwave radio, satellite communications, and laser/infrared optical communications links.
  • MRE = “Meal Ready to Eat” – Originally a military term. Refers to individually packaged rations for soldiers in the field.
  • MSM = “Mainstream Media” – Refers to major news networks that seem to be more interested in pushing propaganda than reporting actual news.
  • MAD = Mutually Assured Destruction
  • Mall Ninja = Someone that values style over substance
  • MOE = Measures of Effectiveness
  • MOI = Mechanism of Injury
  • MOLLE = Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment
  • NBC = nuclear chemical biological warfare
  • No Duff = This is not a drill
  • NINJA = No Income, No Job or Assets
  • OPSEC = Operation Security
  • PMA = Positive Mental Attitude
  • PSK = Personal Survival Kit
  • PSP = Personal Survival Plan
  • PAW = Post Apocalyptic World
  • PDW = Personal Defense Weapon
  • PEK = Personal Escape Kit
  • PPPPPP = Proper Planning & Preparation, Prevents Poor Performance
  • PREP = Preparations
  • POCSIE = Planning, Ordering, Controlling, Supporting, Informing, Evaluating
  • Prepper = Slang for prepared individual. (A Survivalist.)
  • Preps = Slang for preparations.
  • RETREAT = Place of safety to live
  • RECON = Reconnaissance
  • SNAFU = “Situation Normal All F***ed Up” – Closely related to FUBAR. Military term that means everything that can go wrong is going wrong.
  • Shelf Life = The useful life of of product in home storage. In the context of foods: The period of time that a processed food can be stored before changes in color, flavor, texture or the number of micro-organisms make it unacceptable. In the contexts of nonreversible consumer batteries: The period of time that a battery can be stored and still have at least 85% of its original charge.
  • SHTF = S*** Hits the Fan.
  • SOL = S*** Out of Luck, or, Simply Out of Luck
  • SOP or S.O.P = Standard Operating Procedure(s)
  • SAK = Swiss Army Knife
  • SERE = Survive, Evade, Resist, Extract
  • SITX = Situation X
  • SITREP = Situation Report
  • TPTB = “The Powers That Be” – A reference to the known (and unknown) people who control the nation, its money supply, and its citizens. Sometimes shortened to “the PTB.”
  • TEOTWAWKI – “The End of the World as We Know It” – A situation where everything we are accustomed to changes. This acronym is long and awkward, so the misspelled version is also fairly common: TEOWATKI.
  • The Crunch = SHTF
  • Unhardened = Electronics not protected from EMP
  • WROL = Without Rule Of Law. (A lawless situation.)
  • WTSHTF = When the S*** Hits the Fan. also synonymously use the terms TEOTWAWKI, The Crunch, worst case, and the old military saying “when the balloon goes up
  • YOYO = You’re On Your Own. (When government ceases to provide essential services such as fire department and police department protection, and when utilities no longer provide water, sanitation, electricity and phone service.)
  • Zombie = The name for the unprepared and often aggressive masses who will look to take what you have painstakingly prepared.

I’m sure you will come across more Prepper Terms And Acronyms while you are learning but you will at least now be familiar with the most common terms.
